Abstract: The Anthem Arboretum at the Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School builds on the Mahan Rykiel's work on the Anthem House; leveraging critical area afforestation requirements to investigate landscape performance and the role of the designer in shaping vibrant urban ecosystems. The design of the Anthem Arboretum is intended to provide teachers, students, and community members a diverse set of educational opportunities that cut across age and user groups. The project integrates an array of elements that tie in to STEM curriculum objectives, modules from the Baltimore Ecosystem Study’s science education program, and a designed experiment that investigate soil microbial ecology and tree vitality. The project utilized the US Forest Service i-tree modeling program to assess the ecosystem services of the design proposal and as a teaching tool for the teachers and students.
