Mobile Redevelopment Strategies for Vacant Lots in Edinburgh: A Model for Baltimore?
Miller, Markie
Co-Authors: Markie Miller

Edinburgh, a UNESCO World Heritage site, cultivates a sense of place, memory and pride through iconographic landmarks and historical architecture. The image presented is a deliberate and guided attempt to remember a rich culture on which the city was founded. Fountainbridge, a former industrial area has been excluded from the city image. As the industries closed, unemployment increased and residents were forced out. Today Fountainbridge is covered with large stretches of vacant, empty lots; industry is a mere memory. Residents are taking action to bring life back to empty areas and revive Fountainbridge with temporary gardens. This redevelopment strategy could serve as a creative solution to improve vacant areas with limitations and restricted access.
