Abstract: Surface soil metals and nutrients were measured in Cub Hill, which is suburb of Baltimore, and watershed 263 which is located in southwest Baltimore City. The 5 cm samples were taken randomly stratified by an Ecotope landuse/cover classification system. The soils were digested with a strong acid. We compared soil characteristics, nutrients, and metals between Cub Hill and watershed 263 relative to landuse/cover. We also compared the soil concentrations to EPA soil screening levels. Preliminary analysis suggests that in the highly urbanized watershed 263, heavy metal concentrations occurred in hot spots while Cub Hill had largely uncontaminated soils.
