Youth, educator, gardener partnerships for teaching and learning: The Garden Mosaics project.
Alan R. Berkowitz, IES,
Mary Cox, P&P
Garden Mosaics promotes science learning in an informal setting for middle to high school aged youth. Educators facilitate partnerships between the youth and gardeners, exploring the science behind community and home gardens and, ideally, building multicultural sensitivity and carrying out action projects to benefit the community. The first summer of work in the Garden Mosaics project, taking place at 10 sites around the US (including Baltimore), has revealed some expected and some new challenges for partnership programs. These will be discussed, along with plans for the future of the project and its implications for BES.
