Integrating forest planning and scientific research - Baltimore City Reservoirs and NED.
Mark Twery and Robert Northrop
The NED software for decision support can be a useful tool to generate research questions and the data to answer them. We used NED-1 to develop information necessary to evaluate current conditions in the forests surrounding the Baltimore reservoirs so that we could design a forest management plan for the city. The resulting data are also proving useful to answer scientific questions about composition and structure of the forests, the influence of herbivory, and other environmental factors. NED-1 is also proving useful for acquiring data on the forested areas of parks within the city and the parallel structure of the information may encourage cross-site comparisons.
